Understanding COPD

Understanding COPD

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a progressive lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The airways become narrowed and the air sacs lose their elasticity, so breathing out becomes difficult — and air gets trapped in the lungs.

It develops slowly, often over many years, and is closely linked to smoking, biomass smoke and long-term exposure to dust and fumes. Many people ignore the early warning signs — morning cough, breathlessness on stairs — until the disease is advanced. An early diagnosis and structured care make a real difference by slowing decline and reducing flare-ups.

Common symptoms
Progressive breathlessness on exertion, chronic cough, daily sputum, wheeze, frequent chest infections, morning cough in smokers.
How it is diagnosed
History and examination, spirometry (the key test — often with post-bronchodilator measurement), chest imaging and, when needed, blood oxygen assessment.
Management approach
Smoking cessation as the single most important step, individualised inhaler therapy, vaccination advice, guided exercise and a personalised flare-up action plan.
Why Early Care Matters

Protect Your Lung Reserve

COPD progresses silently. By the time breathlessness limits daily activity, a significant part of lung function may already be lost. Once loss occurs, it cannot be regained — which is why early detection and treatment are the cornerstones of COPD care.

  • Annual spirometry for smokers over 40, or anyone with a chronic cough
  • Correct inhaler technique — a common cause of "treatment not working"
  • Structured follow-up after every flare-up to prevent the next one
  • Guidance for families on supporting a COPD patient at home

Smoking and COPD

Quitting smoking is the intervention with the greatest impact on COPD. Dr. Sandip Das provides practical smoking-cessation support within your COPD treatment plan.

COPD FAQs

COPD Questions, Answered

What is the difference between COPD and asthma?
Asthma and COPD are different conditions, though some people can have features of both. Asthma is usually allergic and variable, while COPD — usually linked to smoking or long-term exposure — causes a more fixed obstruction that progresses slowly. A lung function test helps your doctor tell them apart.
Can COPD be reversed?
The damage in COPD cannot be fully reversed, but it can be very well managed. With correct inhaler use, smoking cessation, vaccination and guided exercise, most people with COPD can feel noticeably better and experience fewer flare-ups.
Is COPD only caused by smoking?
Smoking is the most common cause, but long-term exposure to biomass smoke (chulha smoke), dust, fumes and air pollution can also cause COPD. Non-smokers can develop it too — especially with repeated lung infections or occupational exposure.
Can I exercise with COPD?
Yes — structured, guided activity is an important part of COPD management. With a doctor-recommended plan, gentle exercise improves stamina and breathing efficiency. Your doctor can advise suitable breathing techniques.
When is oxygen therapy needed in COPD?
Long-term oxygen therapy is considered only in people with significant low oxygen levels, and only when prescribed and monitored by a doctor after proper evaluation. It is not advised based on breathlessness alone.
