Direct, precise evaluation of the airways — performed at select centres when imaging alone cannot give a complete answer.
The Procedure
A Look Inside the Airways
Bronchoscopy is a key diagnostic tool in pulmonary medicine. A thin, flexible instrument with a camera at its tip is passed gently through the nose or mouth into the windpipe and airways. It lets the doctor look directly at the airway lining — and, when needed, take samples from suspicious areas with precision.
It is performed under local anaesthesia with light sedation, so the patient remains comfortable and drowsy, and is usually completed as a day procedure. Recovery is quick, and the information it provides often determines the exact diagnosis and treatment.
When it is used
Persistent unexplained cough, suspected infection, airway growths or narrowing, unexplained bleeding, suspected ILD needing sampling, and foreign body removal.
What to expect
Fasting before the procedure as instructed, careful monitoring throughout, mild throat soreness afterwards, and most people return home the same day under observation.
After the procedure
Rest for the day, light food once cleared, and a follow-up review where findings and sample results are explained in detail.
When to Consider It
Signs That Evaluation Is Needed
Been coughing up blood, even once
Smoker with a new persistent cough or voice change
CT showing a growth, nodule or narrowing that needs sampling
Recurrent pneumonia in the same part of the lung
Suspected inhaled foreign body that will not clear
ILD diagnosis that needs a tissue sample to guide treatment
Where it is done
Bronchoscopy is performed at select centres where Dr. Sandip Das operates — including Romalinda Multispeciality Hospital, Madhyamgram. The centre and your preparation will be explained when the procedure is advised.
Bronchoscopy FAQs
Bronchoscopy Questions, Answered
What is bronchoscopy?
Bronchoscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through the nose or mouth into the airways to examine them directly. It is done under local anaesthesia with mild sedation, usually as a day procedure.
Is bronchoscopy painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and light sedation, so most people feel discomfort rather than pain. The throat may feel sore for a few hours afterwards.
How long does bronchoscopy take?
The examination itself typically takes 15–20 minutes. Including preparation and recovery, you can expect to be at the centre for a few hours. You are observed until safe to go home.
When are bronchoscopy results available?
Visual findings are available immediately. Results of samples (biopsy, washings, cultures) usually take a few days to a week, depending on the test.
Why is bronchoscopy needed when I already had a CT scan?
A CT shows the structure; bronchoscopy lets the doctor look directly, take samples for a precise diagnosis and, in some cases, treat certain airway problems during the same procedure.
